This morning, the kitchen was quiet, the air sweetened by the last of last night’s incense. I shuffled the deck three times—one card for each tongue calling to me: Spanish, Japanese, French.
The Five of Pentacles showed me cold alleyways and distant signs. The Three of Swords pierced through characters too elegant to be casual. But then, she arrived—The High Priestess. Quiet. Cloaked. Watching me from behind a velvet veil of verbs I did not yet know. Not a word passed her lips, but I understood:
“Learn the language of mystery.”
And so, French it is.
